In kindergarten, the kids are encouraged to write in a journal. They don't emphasize spelling as much as they emphasize phonics and the sounds you hear in a word. It is so fun to see the spellings that they come up with.
Here are a few samples:

(The quilt is beautiful)

(The Dad found the dragon)

(David killed Goliath)

(100th day was fun! We wrote 100!
I brought 100 Cheerios. Capps)
And if you are wondering about the picture,
this is what he looked like on the 100th day.

So Fun!
Love it. Can't wait to use the idea.
